Rubber–necking
motorway accidents This is
starting to become a big problem on Motorways of late. Every night before
I leave work I check the 10 minute stretch of motorway that I take to go home to
see if I am going to be held up. Occasionally, there is an accident and I
will take another route home if this is the case. What really bugs me is
that when there is an accident in the other direction, I am still held up by
people slowing down to have a good look. The other night, the traffic
slowed down to a stop and for no reason other than that there was an accident on
the other side of the motorway. Not only does this usually double my
journey time but more importantly it is dangerous and could cause yet another
accident. What is the attraction to looking at somebody’s misery or
possibly somebody’s death? Do they forget that they are in a car and not
at home watching car crash reality programmes? And
talking of car crash telly, it was to my horror that whilst watching Sky News at
breakfast the other morning they showed footage of a fatale motorway accident
that someone had filmed on their mobile and sent in. After my recent hold
ups on the way home I can understand the gawking public filming something like
this but shouldn’t Sky show a bit of compassion and have the sense to not
include this in their headlines. It only encourages these imbeciles to
break the law by filming on their mobile while they’re in their car with a
high probability of causing yet another accident themselves just to get their
insensitive piece of footage on the TV so they can show off to their friends and
family. As people have no sense or self control when it comes to accidents and driving, I feel that the only way we could stop this dangerous gawking is to put up six foot barriers in the middle of the motorway so that you cannot see the other side.
