The Valentine's Day Rip Off!
I went
shopping yesterday for my Valentine’s Card for my loved one. Every year
my partner and I say we aren’t going to succumb to this blatant attempt at
making lonely people feel more miserable and making couple’s pockets all the
more empty. My partner always says, ‘Why do I need to pay to say I love
you on this particular day, when I can tell you any other day for free?’
I feel I am starting to agree as the price of cards and postage goes up. Is it
no surprise that this one day is the cause of more arguments, break-up’s and,
ultimately, suicides than any other day of the year. But still we have the
nagging feeling to buy a card and a present because if you get one off your
partner and you haven’t also bought one, then moods will turn sour and stress
levels will rise. Anyway,
back to my shopping experience. There I was, casually going through the
cards, reading the insides to find the one with the words that expresses my
feelings the best when I came across a Valentines card that was titled
‘VALENTINES TO THE DOG’. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and
had to do a double take and, yes, it definitely said ‘TO THE DOG’. I
had seen birthday cards from your cat and from your dog but this was a new one
for me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The card companies are really
scraping the barrel producing these cards. I
pondered over this while driving home and came to the conclusion that this is a
gross statement. Although you may love your pets, this is, hopefully not
in the same way that you would love another person. I would therefore
conclude that if you were to buy one of these cards then you are either a very
sad individual or a very, very perverted one! What will the card companies
come up with next – Valentines to your kids! Let me know your feelings about Valentine's Day? Do you love it or do you despise it? Do you agree or disagree with my points? |
