York

For a great day out or an excellent weekend, York offers a multitude of things to pass the time for any age.  I often go there for a weekend to visit my brother and love just going round the shops and pubs, of which there is a pub for each day of the year.  If you have never been before I recommend at least a weekend but a week would be much better.   York is steeped in history with museums and old building a plenty.  Quaint little tea shops and specialised gift shops, plus plenty of restaurants to choose from and a great number of pubs each with their own little stories of York .

Must things to do:

1.  Experience one of the many Ghost Walks (I have been on two).  Each one is different and not only do they make a fun way to pass an hour or two they give you an insight into the history of York.

2.  Walk the wall.

3.  Visit York Minster.

4.  Take a walk down the Shambles.

5.  Have a meal at Michael’s Brasserie (see restaurant recommendations).

6.  Check out as many of the pubs as you can, especially The Roman Bath which has a museum downstairs during the day and live music at night.

7.  York Brewery is a must for the beer fans.  Learn how they make the real ale and try some too.

8.  York Dungeons is a must for horror fans.  Learn about the history torture and execution in a grime and exciting way.  This is great for all ages but not for kids that scare easy.

9.  The JorviK Centre is great for both kids and adults, giving you an insight into the Vikings Britain.

10.  Visit the haunted cellar in The Treasurer's House (Nr York Minster) to see where the Roman Army passed through the wall and scared a workman.

Places to stay

The places to stay in York are like most cities, quite expensive, but I found a couple of great B&B’s that are within walking distance if you like to walk or on the bus route if you don’t.  My favourite is Ascot Lodge on Acomb Road.  They offer fantastic rooms with an excellent breakfast and for a city I thought that their prices were very reasonable.  The other place I have stayed at is The Holgate Bridge on Holgate Road.
